Horse With No Name – America

Let’s keep things simple with a classic acoustic guitar song from the band America. “Horse With No Name” was written early in the career of the band, and their ability to write popular songs with the minimal of chords is a great start for many beginning guitar players. Once again this is a song that you can get a feel of the up and down strokes of the strings by practicing to the music.

Just to let you guys know, America has always been a favorite of the girls, and you should learn a few America tunes in your list of covers to keep the mellow acoustic guitar crowd happy, and to stay on top the rythyms that are required to be a great guitarist. When you are a beginning guitarist, songs that are simple to play are critical to build up your confidence and when you start to play complete songs, and then move on to singing while playing, you will appreciate the simple three chord songs when you start to realize the actual difficulty of playing and singing at the same time.

It is not unusual to try three or four songs before you find something your comfortable with, so always try new songs and see what sticks for you, and know when to move on and take what you have learned from a difficult song, and then come back to see if you are ready to tackle the rest. You will be surprised what the unconcious mind is capable of doing, when you let your brain know that you really want to learn something. So don’t give up on something, just come back at a later date, you will find that you may become are a better player just by not forcing yourself to learn a song that you are not ready to play, but come back a week later and let your brain process the information of chord progressions and put yourself in a better position to learn the material.

Here is the Chords and Lyrics for Americs’s  – Horse With No Name.

       Em                D9/6
On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

     Em9                          Dmaj9
I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la …

       Em                D9/6
After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

     Em9                                  Dmaj9
You see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la …

      Em                  D9/6
After nine days I let the horse run free
‘Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it’s life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

             Em9                          Dmaj9
You see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la …
