Playing along to one of your favorite bands riffs is a lot of fun once you start to play guitar. You could say Custard Pie by Led Zeppelin may not be the best choice for a beginner guitar song, but for those with an electric guitar and amp, plugging in with a little distortion and volume is what it is all about. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are Icons of the Rock era, as well as John Bonham and John Paul Jones. For some reason Physical Graffiti was not widely praised by the critics when it was released, yet as time has passed songs like Custard Pie, Ten Years Gone, The Wanton Song, Trampled Under Foot, The Rover and Kashmir have been greatly appreciated by musicians and fans alike.
When you start to breakdown the riff and chord structure of Custard Pie it starts to show it’s blue roots and rock mix that Jimmy Page was a master of. Getting the timing of the opening A riff is a little tricky at first, but you can get it with some practice, plus it has it roots in some classic blues progressions, so learning this type of riff will only help you in the future.
Next comes the D-C#-C >> C-B-Bb
barre chord run. Once again getting the timing can be a little tricky, but it will help any beginner guitarist with his/her chord sliding technique.
Then you go back to the A riff and then onto the E – G7sus4 – F – G progression. There is a couple of ways to play the G7sus4 chord and I will show them below.
Turn up your amp and play along, or an acoustic guitar will do just fine also. There is a harmonica lead and an electric guitar lead with a wah pedal from Jimmy Page, if you want to see it in slow motion here is a video on You Tube that shows it, or you can check out the Songsterr.com version right here.
As with any new song I learn, some parts of it come easy and others – not so much, but each time I’ve come back to it the timing gets a little easier and my hands get a little more familiar with the fingering of the chords. I think this is true for more guitarists and thats why playing new songs you like and maybe don’t like help you with your overall learning curve.
There are plenty of Led Zeppelin songs to choose from, and as you get better playing guitar you will naturally want to learn more.

Custard Pie Lyrics
Ooh, ya, drop down baby, letcha’ daddy see, yeah
Drop down, mama lay your, just dream of me
Well, my, mama allow me
I fool around all night long
Well, I may look like I’m crazy
I should know right from wrong
See me comin’, throw your man out the door
Ain’t no stranger, done been this way before
See me comin’, mama, throw your man out the door
I ain’t no stranger, I been this way before
Put on your night shirt and your morning gown
You know by that I’m gonna’, shake ‘em on down
Put on your night shirt
Mama, and your morning gown
Well, you know by that I’m
Surely (gonna) shake ‘em down
Shake it, shake it
Ooh, you’re custard pie, yeah, sweet and nice
When you cut it, mama, save me a slice
Your custard pie, yeah
I declare, it’s sweet and nice
I like your custard pie
When you cut it, mama
Mama, please save me a slice
Oh!
Chew on a piece of your custard pie
Chew on a piece of your custard pie
Chew on a piece of your custard pie
Chew on a piece of your custard pie
Drop down
Drop down
Drop down
Drop down
Drop down, yeah
Drop down
Drop down
Chew on a piece of your custard pie
Chew on a piece of your custard pie
