Spin Doctors – Two Princes

It is always nice to find a great rock beat that has a simple riff for beginner guitarists, and – Two Princes - by the Spin Doctors fits into this category.

This song has two main parts and a lead with some minor stops and the structure of the song should be easy to get a handle of pretty quickly. I always like to jam along with the CD or Video when possible so of a song I want to learn, and you should also so that you get the feel of the timing of the chord changes.

Even though this is an electric guitar song, I find myself jamming on my acoustic and singing the lyrics to see if it could be something I could play myself and not destroy the song, and I found out that yes I can get away with jamming this as a one man act and will add it to my playlist. Not all the rock songs that I have learned work out as something that I would play on the acoustic  by myself, so I am always pleased to find a popular song that I can present in a new light to my friends.

Of course if you are in a full band of guitars, bass and drums this would fit in nicely with your set list. The more I play out with my band, the more dance tunes we try to find to cover to keep the girls happy. When the girls are dancing, the boys follow - this makes them thirsty and they end up buying more beverages, which makes the bar owners happy – and this keeps the gigs coming.

As always, try to have fun with any new song you learn, and don’t be hard on yourself when you do not pick up the song right away. Some riffs and chord formations seem to take longer to learn than others, but as you keep your practice up, and get more comfortable learning the guitar techniques, you will find learning new songs become easier, and your music ear will start to almost know if songs are in majors or minors, or even if the song is in a Drop D tuning, all of this comes in time, but do know that it will happen with practice and paying the dues of learrning the guitar.
