Suttle changes in guitar structure can have a large impact to the overall feel of a song.  At first look, the guitar tab for Love Hurts by Incubus seems to be a repeating chord pattern, but once you stop and research further into the chord changes you start to see small, but very important root note changes that make a C-major-chord and an A-minor-chord have an impact on how the singer Brandon Boyd changes the notes on the end of the of each of the verses.

Taylor Swift is actually a very good songwriter and is not afraid to stick to the basics when it comes to laying out the chord progressions for her songs. Many of the current pop writers are scared to put out such simple guitar song riffs, but Taylor has never runaway from the easy to listen to hook lines in her music. When you write from the heart it does not matter that it is just a three or four chord song,  people will see the truth behind what your saying and will get an emotional connection with the music, and that is how most stars get to where they are. If you write a song and do not feel any connection to rhythym and words, most fans will not either.

Neil Young – Rockin In The Free World

Neil Young has always been a good source for the beginning guitar player. He has always written a song as he feels it, and never feels a need to overdub or layer a song with more instruments for the sake of doing it just because he can. Rockin In The Free World is the type of song that you can really sound close to the original recording when you play it thru any electric guitar and amp with a little Gain or Distortion. Just because Neil writes a lot of simple songs, don’t think he is not an accomplished guitarist, Check out Cortez The Killer and Like A Hurricane on the Rust Never Sleeps Live album, and you get a feel for his melodic lead guitar playing.

Do you know that the band was named after a former teacher who when he pronounced his name it sounded like the band name, instead of his real name, Leonard Skinnard, so the story goes.
